Feldjaeger Grey Jasper (LHC) "Jasper"
Sire: Weilander Nimbus Star (LH) Dam: Australian Champion Feldjager Corzf Aplorz DOB: 11/2/01 Jasper just lost his owner and we lost a dear friend. I'd like to say thank you to all Jasper & Ian's "doggie park friends" for their offers of help with looking after Jasper. I know it was a relief for Ian as one of his main priorities in the later stages was to know Jasper was cared for. But Most importantly I'd like to thank Mavis for her care and love of Jasper when he desperately needed someone to be there. Unfortunately Jasper somehow tore his cruciate ligament while Ian was in hospital and could not stay with Mavis for long because he could not negotiate the stairs. I'd also like to thank Dr Aaron Moles of Oakey Flat Rd Vet surgery. Jasper needed a Surgical Specialist to perform his operation and..... in steps Aaron. Aaron is actually in W.A., at Murdoch Uni qualifying for his specialist surgical licence (actually lecturing now I believe), but came all the way home (and I mean flew in at 3am and flew out at 6pm) to perform Jasper's surgery. I knew he could not have been in better hands. Well the outcome? - Bed ridden for 6 weeks - 10 min toilet three times a day - heat pack/ massage/ physio three times a day, then slowly reintroduced to exercise. But the prognosis is good. Other than a little arthritis, everything should be back to normal. Aaron was really pleased with the surgery. Four days with a bandage and when that came off he looked as good as new (all relative). All the stitches were internal so it is a clean wound and healing extremely well. He is progressing well - learning to go to the toilet morning and night. He has such a gentle nature that he is quite happy to lie around. Here's some photos of him.
Before surgery. Posing for the camera with the "poor me" look! The left front leg has gone out in sympathy with the back right (the damaged one)
The day the bandage come off - you can see the bruising still, but the incision is so clean and healing so perfectly.
Not a mark on the outside of the leg. He still has some sticky stuff on him from the bandage, but nothing other than a little bruising (and obviously a lack of coat where he was shaved).
A week down the track and his hair is coming back and already walking better than before the surgery.
January 2008 Well Jasper is now recovering extremely well. We have had him out swimming at the local hydrotherapy pool. He is out in the yard for periods during the day and happily co-habiting with our longhair bitch Dede. This week I will start him swimming in our dam, for just 5 minutes a day and slowly building that up. He had a Bowen Therapy massage last week to make sure that everything is in the right place. His back was a little out, but the therapist was really impressed with the quality of the surgery and the recovery. With comments of how much better he is compared with other dogs at the same stage post surgery. February 2008 Jasper has now settled into his new home with Stephanie, Chris, Anubis (8 mth old Wei) and their cat. When I called in the other day, you could hardly tell that he had a limp. He has lost some weight, his coat is so shiny and he has regained his muscle tone. These are some extracts from Stephanie's emails -
I think everyone would have to agree that if Ian is looking down over Jasper he would be very happy that he has found a loving, caring home, and would be at peace - Thanks Stephanie and Chris !!
